If someone were to ask you what the most valuable element on earth is today, you might be inclined to say gold. It has dominated headlines in recent months, reaffirming its reputation as the ultimate “safe haven” asset in a geopolitically unstable world. Yet while its price has surged to unprecedented highs, surpassing $4,600 USD per ounce, gold is not, in fact, the most valuable element on Earth, either financially or strategically.

Today, the elements commanding the highest value are those enabling decarbonization and the worldwide shift toward electrification.

At the top of the list is rhodium, a silver-white, ultra-rare member of the Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). Rhodium is an essential component of catalytic converters, enabling internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to meet stringent emissions standards worldwide.

Despite the rapid rise of electric vehicles (EVs), the global fleet of ICE and hybrid vehicles remains enormous. But demand alone does not explain why rhodium is considered the king of naturally occurring stable metals. Scarcity is the other key factor driving its value. Roughly 80 to 90 percent of known reserves are concentrated in South Africa’s Bushveld Igneous Complex.

This combination of high demand and limited supply makes rhodium the most expensive commodity metal in global markets, trading at approximately $11,000 USD per ounce in 2026.

Yet many analysts consider it a “sunset metal,” as its long-term prospects are tied to the decline of ICE vehicles and the rise of EVs.

But if rhodium represents the pinnacle of value in the waning age of combustion, what materials are emerging in the age of electrification, and how might they reshape global geopolitics?

Current Kings

As combustion engines give way to electric drivetrains, a new generation of metals is rising to prominence. These are the elements that power batteries, electric motors, and the high-tech infrastructure of a low-carbon world. They are the new “kings” of the electrification era.

While gold captures the headlines, Silver has emerged as the breakout metal of 2026. Trading near record highs of $90+ USD per ounce, silver has transitioned from a mere precious metal to a critical industrial pillar. As a result of strong demand from high-efficiency solar cells and AI hardware, coupled with investors seeking safe-haven assets, its price gains over the last fiscal year were almost double those of gold.

But if silver is the conductor of this new era, lithium and cobalt are its fuel tanks. Lithium is the backbone of lithium-ion batteries, storing the energy that powers everything from EVs to grid-scale storage that help to stabilize the electricity system. Its unique electrochemical properties allow batteries to hold large amounts of energy in a compact, lightweight form. This feature has made it indispensable to the global shift away from fossil fuels.

However, lithium’s energy storage crown is no longer uncontested. The market is witnessing the first mass-scale rollout of sodium-ion batteries. By utilizing abundant, inexpensive salt rather than scarce lithium, this “sodium hedge” has begun to dominate the stationary energy storage sector and is providing a cost-effective powertrain for the burgeoning class of urban micro-EVs. While sodium-ion hasn’t replaced lithium for high-performance needs, its rapid adoption is now acting as a vital price ceiling, preventing lithium scarcity from derailing the pace of global electrification.

Cobalt plays a complementary yet critical role, stabilizing battery chemistry to ensure safety and longevity under repeated charge and discharge cycles. Without cobalt, batteries would be more prone to overheating, degradation, or failure, limiting their reliability for both consumer electronics and EVs. Its scarcity and concentrated production, largely in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), give cobalt a strategic dimension much like rhodium’s dominance in catalytic converters. 

Copper, by contrast, is the workhorse of global electrification. Unlike lithium and cobalt, which are largely confined to batteries, copper serves as the primary “connective tissue” of the new energy economy, uniquely positioned across almost every stage of power generation and distribution. Its superior thermal and electrical conductivity properties make it the core component for high-efficiency electric motors, rapid-charging infrastructure, and the massive renewable grids required to link wind farms and solar parks to the consumer.

Together, lithium, cobalt, and copper form the backbone of the electrified economy. Their value is not just measured in dollars per ounce, but in their critical role enabling the global move toward clean, reliable, and scalable energy systems.

Reinventing Resource Power

For much of the 20th century, global power was defined by oil. Nations with vast reserves of crude influenced markets, shaped alliances, and wielded economic leverage in ways few other resources ever have. Control over barrels of oil meant control over energy, mobility, and, to a large extent, the fate of entire economies. 

That influence shaped everything from trade to diplomacy, and it helped fuel regional tensions and outright conflict. Disputes over access to oil fields and pricing played a role in wars such as Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990, and the broader Gulf conflicts that followed. Major oil-producing regions, like the Middle East and parts of Africa, saw internal unrest and external interventions tied to the pursuit of oil wealth and the strategic power it conveyed. 

Even today, chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz remain flashpoints precisely because a significant share of the world’s crude flows through them, underscoring how oil supply control has long been intertwined with geopolitical tension and regional instability. 

The 2026 escalation of tensions in the Middle East, culminating in the current IRGC-led blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, has underscored a new reality. While oil shocks still rattle markets, the mineral shocks of the mid-2020s are more profound. Unlike oil, which can be tapped from strategic reserves or alternate wells, the concentration of Rhodium in South Africa or Cobalt in the DRC means that a single local disruption can now halt the global production of clean energy technologies overnight. We have moved from a world of ‘fuel security’ to a world of ‘material sovereignty.’

The New Resource Realms

Today, the world is reorienting. As nations decarbonize and electrify their economies, the levers of influence are shifting from oil fields to mineral deposits. Lithium, cobalt, and copper have emerged as the strategic assets of the 21st century. Those who control these critical materials, whether through mining, refining, or advanced processing, now hold the power to shape global supply chains, influence energy transition timelines, and even dictate who benefits most from the electrified economy.

Lithium: The White Gold of the Electrified World

Economically viable lithium deposits are concentrated in a handful of regions around the globe. The most famous is South America’s “Lithium Triangle,” spanning high-altitude salt flats in Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia. Meanwhile, Australia dominates global production from hard-rock spodumene mines. China is also a significant producer and, as of early 2025, claims to hold around 16.5% of global lithium resources. Zimbabwe has emerged as a notable producer as well, with output growing exponentially in recent years. Smaller deposits exist in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, though many of these are still being developed.

But simply owning lithium deposits is not enough. The real leverage comes from turning raw ore or brine into battery-grade compounds, such as lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, that can actually be used in modern batteries. Here, control shifts to industrial capacity rather than geography alone. In this realm, China dominates global refining and chemical processing, giving it outsized influence over the speed and cost at which lithium reaches manufacturers worldwide.

This dynamic has profound implications for the future. Countries rich in lithium are seeking to capture more of the downstream value by building processing plants, striking joint ventures, and negotiating favorable contracts with tech and automotive companies. Meanwhile, nations that already control refining, processing, and advanced chemical production are poised to exert strategic influence over global supply chains. 

For emerging players like the U.S., Canada, and parts of Europe, developing both mining and processing capacity has become a national priority, as dependence on foreign supply could have economic and even security consequences.

Cobalt: The Controversial King of Battery Chemistry

Roughly 70% of the world’s cobalt reserves are concentrated in the DRC, a nation rich in resources but burdened by political instability, complex regulatory environments, and a history of mining practices linked to child labor and unsafe working conditions. This concentration makes cobalt supply highly sensitive, and it means that the metal’s value is not just in the ground, but in the ability to move it safely, ethically, and efficiently into global supply chains.

Control of cobalt is therefore about more than mining. Refining, chemical processing, and responsible sourcing are equally important. Countries and companies that dominate these steps can dictate terms for global battery production. China, for example, has invested heavily in both Congolese mining operations and domestic refining facilities, giving it outsized influence over cobalt supply. Western automakers and battery producers, meanwhile, are actively seeking alternatives like nickel-rich chemistries, cobalt-free batteries, and recycling programs in an effort to reduce dependency on a single, concentrated source.

Looking ahead, cobalt’s role as a strategic metal may shift, but its influence will remain significant. Control over cobalt supply, and the know-how to refine and incorporate it into batteries, grants leverage over the pace and affordability of electrification. In a world racing toward low-carbon mobility, cobalt is a geopolitical pivot, shaping which nations and companies can assert leadership in the battery-powered economy of the future.

Copper: The Workhorse of the Electrified World

This versatile, highly conductive metal is indispensable to electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, charging infrastructure, and the smart grids that connect them all. From the wiring in EV motors to the cables linking solar farms to the grid, copper is the backbone of the electrified economy.

Unlike lithium and cobalt, copper is more widely distributed around the world, with major reserves in Chile, Peru, Australia, and Indonesia, as well as significant deposits in North America and Africa. Yet while the metal itself is abundant relative to cobalt, its strategic importance stems from the sheer scale of demand and the concentration of refined supply. 

Those who control the flow of copper, from mine to refinery to grid, wield influence over the pace, reliability, and cost of electrification worldwide. Countries that dominate production and processing, such as Chile and Peru, and nations with advanced refining and manufacturing capabilities, such as China, Japan, Germany, and the United States, are positioned to shape the economics of the electrified world.

In the era of renewable energy and electric mobility, copper may not be rare, but it is absolutely indispensable, making it a critical instrument of power in the 21st-century energy economy.

The New Resource Rulers

Just as oil once determined alliances and conflicts, the availability and control of lithium, cobalt, and copper is creating a new geopolitical landscape. Nations rich in these resources are becoming the new centers of leverage in a world that increasingly runs on electrons rather than hydrocarbons. But owning the resource is only half the battle. Those who master supply, processing, and distribution are the new geopolitical rulers of the electrified age.

China: The Dominant Player in Processing and Refining

China has emerged as the most influential global player across all three metals, not just through reserves but primarily through value-chain control. Chinese companies and state-backed investors have secured mining stakes around the world and built out massive refining capacity. China now processes roughly two-thirds of global lithium and cobalt and nearly half of the world’s copper.

This gives China disproportionate leverage. Even when raw materials come from places like Australia or the DRC, they often end up in Chinese refineries, steel mills, or battery supply chains. This influence extends into manufacturing, with China producing most of the world’s lithium‑ion batteries, solar panels, and other clean‑energy components, deepening its control over the entire ecosystem.

Australia: Lithium Mining Powerhouse

Australia is the world’s largest producer of lithium, accounting for the majority of mined output. Its dominance in raw lithium gives it significant strategic weight, especially as the demand for battery metals continues to skyrocket. Canberra is actively investing in building domestic processing and refining capacity to capture more value beyond mining.

Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia: The Lithium Triangle

Chile and Argentina, together with Bolivia (often called the Lithium Triangle), hold a large share of the world’s lithium reserves. Chile alone has a substantial portion of known lithium resources and is a major supplier, giving it geopolitical significance in the global energy transition. Bolivia’s massive, but still under‑developed, reserves could further shift the balance if fully brought online.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Cobalt and Copper Giant

The DRC is the leading source of cobalt, producing roughly 70% of the global supply. It also contributes significantly to copper output, particularly from its Copperbelt region, making the country central to global supply chains for two critical metals. Its cobalt dominance has earned it comparisons to “the Saudi Arabia of the electric vehicle age.”

However, China, has invested heavily in Congolese mining and controls most of the cobalt refining capacity, blending upstream and downstream influence.

Chile: Copper’s Global Leader

Chile is the world’s top producer of copper and a dominant source of the metal used in wiring, grids, and EV infrastructure. Its output impacts global prices and supply security, giving it strategic weight in industrialized economies dependent on electrification.

Other Influential Players

Peru and Zambia, while often overlooked in favour of headline producers like Chile, play a meaningful role in stabilizing and diversifying the global copper supply. Their output provides an important counterbalance to over-reliance on any single source, adding resilience to a supply chain that the world increasingly cannot afford to have disrupted.

The United States, Canada, and the European Union occupy a different but equally strategic position. None are dominant raw producers, but all three are making significant investments in domestic mining and processing capacity, driven by their shared urgency to reduce dependence on China and build supply chains they can control. For these economies, the energy transition is as much a national security issue as an environmental one.

Perhaps the most dynamic shift is unfolding across Africa and Latin America, where a new generation of producers is emerging. Countries sitting on untapped reserves are finding themselves at the centre of a global courtship, pursued by established powers eager to lock in future supply. Whether they become partners or competitors in this race will depend largely on who invests, on what terms, and how quickly these deposits can be brought online.

The Provenance Premium

In 2026, being a ‘New Resource Ruler’ is no longer enough to guarantee market dominance. A new tier of value has emerged in the global commodity markets: the Ethical Premium. As the European Union’s Digital Battery Passport regulations go into full effect this year, every gram of lithium, cobalt, and nickel entering the European market must now carry a digital provenance record. This data-backed ledger tracks the carbon footprint of extraction, the water usage of the mine, and the labor conditions of the workers.

This regulatory shift has bifurcated the market. “Clean” minerals sourced from jurisdictions with high ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards now command a 15–20% price premium over “blind” commodities. For automotive giants like Tesla and Volkswagen, paying this premium is no longer optional, as it is now a legal requirement to maintain access to the world’s most lucrative EV markets.

This is where the geopolitical map of 2026 redraws itself once more. While the DRC may have the most cobalt and China the most refining capacity, nations like Canada and Australia hold the world’s most valuable “ethical reserves.”

Opportunities for Canada

Because of this shift toward ‘Certified Ethical Supply,’ Canada sits at a unique crossroads in the new global scramble for critical minerals. The country is endowed with significant reserves of lithium, cobalt, copper, nickel, and rare earth elements, and its mining sector is globally respected for transparency, regulatory rigor, and environmental standards. These advantages give Canada a strong starting point, but raw resources alone will not guarantee geopolitical influence in a world increasingly defined by electrification.

To gain real leverage, Canada must move beyond extraction and focus on downstream processing and value creation. Currently, much of Canada’s mined minerals are exported as raw ore to foreign refiners, particularly in Asia, where they are converted into battery-grade chemicals, cathodes, and other critical components. By developing domestic refining, processing, and even battery manufacturing capacity, Canada could capture a larger share of the economic and strategic value embedded in its minerals.

Strategically, this shift would allow Canada to:

  • Strengthen supply chain resilience for North America, reducing dependence on foreign processing hubs.
  • Exert diplomatic influence by supplying allied nations with ethically sourced and reliable battery metals.
  • Create high-value domestic jobs in advanced manufacturing and clean-energy industries.

The Canadian government has already begun laying the groundwork through policies and partnerships aimed at fostering critical mineral clusters and encouraging private investment in processing facilities. To maximize impact, Canada should accelerate these efforts by investing in research and innovation, forging cross-border industrial partnerships, and developing export frameworks that combine economic benefit with environmental and ethical responsibility.

Power, Minerals, and the New Geopolitical Order

The world’s most valuable elements are no longer defined solely by their rarity or price per ounce. In the electrified era, value is measured by strategic utility, supply-chain control, and ethical provenance. Rhodium once reigned supreme as the king of combustion engines, but lithium, cobalt, and copper now form the backbone of a low-carbon economy, powering everything from electric vehicles to renewable grids.

Geopolitics is following the flow of electrons. Nations that control not just the mines but the processing, refining, and manufacturing of these critical metals hold outsized influence over the pace, reliability, and cost of the global energy transition. China’s dominance, the DRC’s cobalt reserves, Chile’s copper, and Australia’s lithium illustrate that raw resources alone no longer define power; control over the value chain is what truly matters.

For countries like Canada, the opportunity is clear. We must leverage our vast, ethically sourced mineral reserves, build domestic processing and manufacturing capacity, and become a trusted, reliable player in the global electrified economy. By doing so, Canada and other forward-looking nations can secure economic value, energy security, and diplomatic leverage in a world where electrons, not barrels of oil, dictate influence.

The transition is underway. Those who understand it, invest in it, and govern it wisely will be the new masters of global power.
